PORNOGRAPHY AND VIOLENT CONTENT

GUIDING KIDS AWAY FROM EXTREME MATERIAL ONLINE

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

NADIA’S EXPERIENCE

One of the things that has most distressed me over the years involved my daughter Maddie seeing something that was entirely beyond our, or her, control. In fact, she wasn’t even using a computer or a handset herself!

When she was at school and aged about 11, during lunch break, one of her friends thought it would be funny to shock everyone by clicking on a clip of someone being beheaded by a terrorist and thrusting it into everyone’s faces. The horror of seeing such a thing couldn’t be avoided, as Maddie was given no choice as to whether or not to watch it. Soldiers who return from wars can sometimes require long-term counselling as a result of such scenes. How have we got to a point where seeing such graphic and disturbing images is “something that just happens”, and that your kid can come home from school and say “I saw someone being beheaded”? The availability of these clips is desensitizing our youngsters to the horrific violence they show.

This effect of adult content on youngsters was really brought home to me, and especially my husband Mark, when we spoke to his eldest daughter’s boyfriend, who described the ways in which hardcore porn and its availability online was creating huge pressures and confusion in young men. He described how boys he knew were sourcing ever more explicit and extreme content in an attempt to outdo each other, and were then sharing it to shock each other. They then challenged each other to try the stuff they’d seen people doing online. He said that many of his friends just didn’t know about boundaries when it came to flirting or sex, and that most boys were in a fog of intimidation (caused by the footage). They also had a deep misunderstanding of what was “normal” in a sexual relationship, as ideas of what might be acceptable had been so monumentally blurred by porn.
